Aklan State University competes with three equally popular universities in the Asia-Pacific region for the annual Global Universities Partnership on Environment and Sustainability (GUPES) Green Gown Awards for Community Engagement. ASU rivals with other finalists that include De La Salle University and Xavier University from the Philippines, and Fiji National University in Fiji. They will compete for the recognition as the most prestigious higher education institution that maintains exceptional environmental and sustainability initiatives and best practices across the world. 

For its entry, ASU took pride of its Manduyog Biodiversity Conservation Program that showcased the concerted effort of students, employees and the community in protecting and preserving the rich natural resources and religious-cultural heritage of the legendary Manduyog Hill inside the Banga campus. To sustain the natural habitat of the hill, seedling banks was established, science and technology farm for conservation of native animals prioritized, and organic farming systems laboratory put up to produce organic crops and vegetables. 

The winner of the award will be announced on September 13, 2016 during the GUPES Green Gown Awards Ceremony in Boston, USA. This project is supported by the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP).#
